Biochemistry

Course Description:

Biochemistry is a course for students interested in studying the integration between chemistry and biology through developing a solid understanding of structural biology, enzymology and metabolism. Biochemistry underlies concepts from all courses covered in Illumina Learning's competitive biology classes, and gaining a solid understanding of biochemistry is integral to future success as scientists.

Course objectives:

  • Introduce students to the essential processes of cellular respiration, fermentation, and photosynthesis.

  • Explore organic chemistry and the structure of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids!

  • Understand metabolic pathways involved in organic metabolism and diseases that result when metabolism is disturbed, including diabetes mellitus.

  • Prepare for higher-level STEM competitions and future research projects by developing a thorough understanding of protein analysis techniques, DNA technologies, and more!

Course highlights:

  • Taught by a nationally-recognized researcher and USABO semifinalist with significant experience in biogeochemistry research.

  • Personalized curriculum that focuses on helping students improve in areas that they are struggling with.

  • An opportunity for students to make new friends and collaborate on course material through our Discord server.
